Some of GOALS Psychology’s clinicians’ therapy and treatment modalities include:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Assisting with recognising negative behavioural and thought patterns, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy focuses on future ways to break those patterns with realistic goals. This type of therapy often involves role playing common scenarios and practicing ways an individual could turn their past experiences around to achieve a more positive outcome.

CBT can assist those with PTSD, eating disorders, or depression, but can also be beneficial for anyone wanting to learn how to better manage stressful situations.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Embracing mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy delves into an individual’s core values and beliefs and helps focus on what is important to them. It involves accepting those things out of one’s control, facing fears, and making meaningful changes to enrich the life of the individual by reducing the impact and influence of difficult feelings and thoughts.

ACT can assist those with OCD, anxiety, depression, and addiction.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectal Behaviour Therapy aims to replace unhelpful behaviour and emotions with new behaviours. It assists with understanding one’s emotions, and helps motivate behaviour change through self-awareness. Boundary-setting, managing emotions without using harmful behaviours, and being present in the moment are common skills acquired through this therapy.

DBT can assist those with Borderline Personality Disorder, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and PTSD, as well as those who have difficulties controlling their emotions.

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

Linking emotions to identity, Emotion Focused Therapy explores emotions and feelings, rather than avoiding them. Emotional awareness is a key aspect of this therapy, leading to better skills in adaptability and increased control of emotions over one’s everyday life.

EFT can assist those with depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Assisting individuals in creating positive behavioural changes, Motivational Interviewing explores the reasons for one’s ambivalence through open-ended questioning. This type of therapy empowers individuals to overcome hurdles to making change around a particular behaviour or habit by finding motivation to let go of repeated harmful actions.

MI can assist those seeking support for behavioural change in relation to lifestyle (smoking, weight, substance abuse, and physical activity).

Family Systems Therapy

Centred around the idea that an individual is inextricably linked to their family unit, Family Systems Therapy proposes that an issue affecting one member of the family inevitably affects all other members of the group. It assists families in understanding how addressing individual problems is essential to improving the group’s emotional and behavioural functioning, leading to stronger support systems and healthier relationships.

Family Systems Therapy can assist families with group or individual concerns including anxiety, depression, dysfunctional relationships, divorce, stress and trauma, anger management issues, parenting issues and conflicts, addiction, eating disorders, and bipolar disorder.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy looks at present and future goals and circumstances, rather than focusing on the past. This therapy helps identify the skills and changes required to reach an individual’s future goals and supports one in achieving that vision.

SBFT is often used in conjunction with other types of therapy and can assist with child behavioural concerns at home or at school, as well as family and couple relationship issues.

Tips for getting the most from your child’s appointment

  • Prior to your appointment, make some notes about what you’d like to discuss and reflect on any changes since the last appointment.
  • Take notes throughout the session to help you remember the plan of action created.
  • Be open about any difficulties or uncomfortable feelings. Therapy is a safe space to work through these emotions and sharing them can reduce stress and facilitate personal growth.
  • Involve more than just the primary caregiver in your child’s therapy. It’s beneficial if other key adults (like fathers or grandparents) participate in sessions and support practicing skills between appointments. This collaborative approach helps manage therapy goals more effectively.
  • Communicate any challenges or barriers your child faces in completing their therapy “homework.” This allows the clinician to adjust recommendations to better fit your child’s needs and family dynamics.
  • Consider the best time of day for your child to absorb more information. Morning or weekend appointments may maximise your child’s engagement and benefit from the session.
  • Book several appointments in advance to maintain momentum. Frequent sessions can significantly enhance the effectiveness of your therapy.

You can read all of their clinician’s bios on their website and book online, or phone 0451674121 or email hello@goalspsychology.com and the team can assist you further.
